Choosing a career path after finishing education means thinking about a lot more than the job itself. Jobs are more flexible than ever and a typical working day is a thing of the past. Planning a career can be tough in an ever-changing job market. It's not just the job itself you've got to consider; it's the working hours, work environment, pay and training opportunities as well. For example, not all workers are simply employed by a company. There are lots more people working on short and fixed term contracts instead of full-time, permanent ones.


Of course there are people who deliberately seek out temp work because of uncertainty in their own lives, because they need some extra cash, or because they simply want to try on a job for size, says Michael Kerr, an international business speaker, author and president of Humor at Work.

Set goals. Kerr says you should never keep your career goals to yourself. Maintain good communication. Keep the lines of communication open with all parties involved in your job; making sure to report status, answer questions, and ask questions as needed, Hockett says.
